Puss In Boots Australian Premiere: Sydney's Entertainment Quarter Puss Mania, by Eva Rinaldi

The Puss In Boots Australian premiere took place at Moore Park, Fox Studios today, and it was  quite the cat's meow (and hot alongside the yellow carpet).

It was just about the purr fect time, with the holiday season coming up down under in Australia.

Lots of teen girls attended this this one, with many bringing along their mums.

Sydney media were glued to the yellow carpet and and no kitty litter was required, but bottles of water were popular with the crowd.

Promotional blurb reads "A story about the events leading up to the sword fighting cat's meeting with Shrek and his friends", but that's making it sound too simple.

Vet's and the like will advise you that cats don’t like being sprayed in the face with water. It may go without saying, but most users of a litter box also don’t care to be smacked in the head with a guitar.

Fortunately, we have cartoons like “Puss in Boots” to swing the point home.

Some people know him as Frisky Two Times, some as the Chupacabra. But, most refer to him as Puss in Boots (voice of Antonio Banderas), a feline unlike any other, both because of his famous footwear and his well known cat fighting skills.

After appearing as a sidekick in three “Shrek” movies and numerous holiday specials, it’s great to see an expanded presentation of Banderas’ most beloved role, with Puss bearing more of a resemblance to the famous Zorro. His wicked sense of humour is loved by millions.

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount Pictures have done Puss justice with this production, and we hope the numbers are good for their beancounting friends.  The good news is that it's not a dog of a film.

The puss personality lends itself to fast-paced or is that fast footed adventure and hilarity, to put you and your cat in stitches.

Puss in Boots is a well known entity, but this cat flick also comes across as fresh and very cool for cats.

Australia will not be changing the flicks name to 'Cat In Boots' as the United Arab Emirates has done. Us Aussies remain very high on the original 'Puss'.

Round up the kids of all ages and lick up the action at Puss In Boots. It's truly the cat's meow. 4 out of 5 paws.

Director: Chris Miller
Writers: Charles Perrault, Brian Lynch
Staring: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek and Zach Galifianakis

Musicians and machines - exploring the future of live music, Eva Rinaldi

The relationship between musicians and interactive computers will be explored in a new Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University study.

While computer technology plays a role in most areas of music production and performance, the potential for a computer to act as a live performance partner is relatively under-explored, according to lead researcher Professor Andrew Brown.

“We predict that the next wave in music development will be interactive performance with digital systems,” he said.

“Our research goal is to develop a music system that ‘listens’ to  a performer and responds in real time, which is a significant step away from the passive systems which operate today.

“There is capacity for digital systems to achieve greater sophistication and to demonstrate a sense of autonomy, which will open up new avenues of musical expression.

“There is real potential for new genres of music to emerge as technology continues to expand its role and offer musicians an enhanced performance experience.”

“We see parallels between interactive music systems for the 21st century and previous performance technologies such as the saxophone that played an important role in shaping the 20th century musical genres of jazz and rock music.”

Professor Brown says the first phase of the study will investigate the role of a musical partner by examining interactions between human musicians.

“By measuring human gestures and interactions we’ll be able to transfer this knowledge to computer systems to ensure this technology can anticipate the actions and movements of human performers and intuitively respond,” he said.

Professor Brown will lead an international research team including Associate Professor Ian Whalley of the University of Waikato, New Zealand; Dr Michael Young of Goldsmiths, London; Associate Professor Francois Pachet of Sony Computer Science Laboratories in Paris and colleague Dr Toby Gifford of the Queensland Conservatorium.

The project will be funded by an Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Project grant and will commence in early 2012.

This marks the fifth consecutive year that the Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre (QCRC) has been awarded an ARC grant.

MALE ARTIST OF THE YEAR – Shane Nicholson
VOCAL COLLABORATION OF THE YEAR - Whistling Cannonballs with Paul Kelly

2011 has been a massive year for Shane.  It all kicked off back during the Tamworth Country Music Festival at his sell-out Bad Machines album preview show at the Family Hotel.  Shane also performed the title track and first single from the Bad Machines album at the 2011 Jayco C.M.A.A. After launching ‘Bad Machines’ in Melbourne & Sydney in March, Shane and wife Kasey Chambers took their ‘Little Birds & Bad Machines’ show on the road with the tour culminating in Queensland just after the Gympie muster. After which Shane shot the video for his latest single Jimmie Rodgers Was A Vampire also directed by Duncan Toombs.  The couple then enjoyed a few peaceful weeks at home before the birth of their baby daughter; Poet in early October.

During his infrequent breaks this year, Shane also had on his ‘producer’s hat’ working with Beccy Cole, whose ‘Songs & Pictures’ album is also nominated as Album Of The Year.
He has also been working with up and coming artist’s country singer/songwriter; Nikki Jensen and bluegrass band; The Quarry Mountain Dead Rats.

Shane has recently been the special guest of K.D. Lang on her Australian tour as well as being one of the select entourage of the rapturously received ‘Way To Blue – Nick Drake Tribute’ concerts in Sydney & Melbourne.’

Bad Machines has also been nominated for the ARIA Country Album Of The Year that will be announced this Sunday November 27th.   This is the first time ever that a married couple have had an album nomination in the same category with Kasey’s ‘Little Bird’ album also up for the award.  Add to that that Shane’s label mate Troy Cassar-Daley also in this category with his live album, should make for a fun night for all three of Australia’s favourite country music stars and their record label Liberation.

Shane will headline his own show at Tamworth again this year at The Family Hotel.  Tickets are on sale now.

The Take 40 Stars Of Summer party, presented by the new Toyota Yaris, returned today (and tonight) launching the summer party season in pure style. Set against a stunning harbour backdrop, the party plus featured intimate live performances from dance music powerhouse Sneaky Sound System and ARIA Award nominee Havana Brown.
Guests soaked up the sunshine by the pool, rubbing shoulders with Sydney’s socialites et al.
Sneaky Sound System showcased songs from their new album “From Here To Anywhere”. Having recently collaborated with Jay Z and Kanye West, Sneaky Sound System’s Connie Mitchell was in fine form .
‘Breakthrough Artist of the Year’ and ‘Highest Selling Single’ nominee Havana Brown hit the decks and performed her singles “We Run the Night” and “Get It”.
Take 40’s mission did well in a strong follow up to last year’s Stars Of Summer party, which was described as “one of the parties of the year” by those many.
It was all excitement at this pre-ARIA Awards party in a boom week for Australia’s music elite.
If you didn't already know Take 40’s partnership with Toyota for Stars of Summer is in celebration of ‘living the big life’ – the proposition of the new Toyota Yaris. Will it help sell more Toyota's? Maybe time will tell.
The summer launch party plus took place at a luxurious $20 million Point Piper mansion, and offered up money-can’t-buy opportunity for a handful of Take 40 fans to live it large, and it was also filmed for TV and online audiences. You will likely see footage show up on MTV and the like.
Well done to Take 40 Australia, MCM Media, Nicole Hart at Revolutions Per Minute PR, and a ton of others who helped put the huge party together. See you again next year.
