Ali Campbell's UB40 With Billy Ocean Big Mountain At State Theatre, Sydney

Ali Campbell

The State Theatre in the heart of Sydney presented Ali Campbell's UB40 Tour with special guests Billy Ocean and Big Mountain.

If you enjoy the sounds of reggae and Caribbean music then you would have loved this.

The voice that was behind the hits "Red Red Wine" and "Can't Help Falling In Love" is now on stage singing to a different tune, nonetheless one that will still resonate strongly with audiences.

McManus Entertainment promotional pitch...

McManus Entertainment is delighted to announce Ali Campbell's UB40 Australian Tour featuring special guests Billy Ocean, plus Big Mountain featuring Junior Marvin. With shows in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, this is a show not to be missed for lovers of Reggae and Caribbean music.

With one of the world’s most distinctive and recognisable voices, Ali Campbell, the ex-UB40 ...frontman and original vocalist of massive worldwide hits "Red Red Wine", "Kingston Town" and "Can’t Help Falling In Love", returns to Australia with his new band. As lead singer with the world-renowned group UB40, Campbell has sold over 70 million records worldwide, toured across the globe, notched up four number No. 1 worldwide singles, over 40 Top 40 UK singles, released 24 studio albums and received an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement.

Having sold over 30 million records worldwide Grammy-winning Billy Ocean has created a distinct and unique sound with hits like “Love Really Hurts Without You”, “Caribbean Queen”, “When The Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going” and one of the biggest hits of the 80’s, “Get Outta My Dreams, Get Into My Car”.

Big Mountain helped catapult Jamaican music to the mainstream with their cover of Peter Frampton’s “Baby I Love Your Way”. The group sold over a million copies of their album Unity featuring the smash hits “Sweet Sensual Love” and “Baby, I Love Your Way”. Joining Big Mountain on stage is Junior Marvin. Hailing from Bob Marley and The Wailers he first appeared on Marley’s legendary album Exodus and all Bob Marley and The Wailers albums since then.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see some of reggae’s best and well-loved artists in an intimate setting on one special night!

Background on Ali Campbell and UB40...

Ali Campbell, his brother and some mates began UB40 in the late 1970's in a basement in Birmingham. He started the band to promote his love of reggae.

With the strong political sentiment in their music, UB40 reflected angrily on Margaret Thatcher's Britain. He tells the press "We were quite angry, we felt like we'd been thrown away". Their message was obviously heard, as their phones were tapped by MI5. UB40 would go on to sell more than 70 million records around the world and produce 40 top ten hits in Britain.

In January 2008 he had an acrimonious split with the band. He was replaced by brother Duncan, but the pair have apparently not spoken since.

Ali Campbell is in Australia with his new band, still performing hits like Red Red Wine and Kingston Town.

HOLLYWOOD, FL, JAN. 24, 2012: Reggae celebrity
Born in Clarendon, Jamaica, Glen Washington became a household name when his romantic hit, "Kindness for Weakness" climbed international charts in 1998 and remained one of the most beloved lovers rock singles in Jamaican music history. From there, his warm vocal tone helped create the blueprint for the modern, melodic lovers rock sound that continues to populate the most sought-after romantic reggae compilations in America, Jamaica and the United Kingdom.

Washington won "Best Reggae Male Vocalist" and "Best New Reggae Artist" at the 1998 Reggae Soca Music Awards, and won "Reggae Album of the Year" at the 2000 Reggae Soca Music Awards.

Big Day Out promoter Ken West has had a rough year.

Big Day Out promoter Ken West has had a rough year. In the last twelve months he has parted ways with business partner Viv Lees, drastically re-shaped the 2012 events and, only yesterday, announced that the Auckland leg of the BDO will be scrapped indefinitely.

Over the last few weeks he has given a number of candid interviews in which he has discussed everything from the near collapse of his festival dream to the destabilising effects of competing events such as Soundwave.
FasterLouder met up with West for a tour around the re-modelled Gold Coast site and to talk to him about the year that’s been, dealing with Kanye West’s people, not booking New Order and what happened the year that Nirvana didn’t headline Big Day Out

The lead-up to Big Day Out 2012 must have caused you plenty of headache, Ken – what are your thoughts now that everything and everyone’s locked in and good to go?
These large-scale events involve a massive amount of funding, don’t get anything from the government and have to totally rely on people buying tickets – it has to be seriously re-looked that music needs support just as much, if not more, than an Indy race, a sporting event or a horse thing. A myriad of things get funding whereas we get shoved to one side; more importantly, we don’t have a recording industry anymore – we’re left in cyberspace to fend for ourselves.
Rock and Roll is more cool than Indy cars going around and around – this is where the BDO leverage comes in: because of that 20-year legacy, we can actually communicate with people on a high political and business level. That’s the reality at the moment: everyone’s suffering from overspending or lack of attendance. We won’t pay so much and we rely on our audience, and then get buffeted by “you couldn’t deliver the big acts” or “you pay for the big acts, but you can’t afford it.” There seem to be two ways of going broke, but not two solutions, so we need to find more solutions.

What’s your favourite Big Day Out so far?
Hopefully it’s in the future, but 2010 was my favourite BDO year because I’ve had so many friends on the road – it was so massive and so easy. 2000 was a great year with Red Hot Chili Peppers; 1997 was an amazing year with Soundgarden closing and The Prodigy and The Offspring on the main stage. I often find for myself that the best years are with bands that have done it before.

Jessica Mauboy And Stan Walker Rock Canberra's Galaxy

Canberra's Southern Cross Club tonight sees Australian music sensations Jessica Mauboy and Stan Walker perform tonight.

It's dubbed the 'Galaxy' tour and the artists have had over 15 Australian hit singles between them and they've sold more than 1.5 million singles and 250,000 albums.

Over 1400 music lovers turned out in the nations capital to hear that best that these amazing Australian performing artists had to offer.

It's an urban pop show and the headliners are supported by what we understand are the hottest soul band in Australia.

Stan went on first to strong applause and his numbers included 'Amazing Grace', 'On Our Way' and 'Tear Down These Walls'.

This was followed up by the equally impressive Jessica Mauboy who was decked out in a beautiful black and gold dress, and silver diamond high heel shoes.

Her opening numbers were 'Inescapable', 'Running Back' and 'Been Waiting'.

Mauboy had released her debut studio album 'Been Waiting' during November 2008, which launched her first number-one hit single 'Burn'.

'Been Waiting' also featured her other top-10 hits 'Because' and 'Running Back', and was confirmed double platinum as it became the second highest-selling Australian album of 2009.

She earned a massive seven 2009 ARIA Music Awards for the album and its singles while also achieving Highest Selling Single for 'Running Black'.

Her second album 'Get 'Em Girls' debuted at #6 on the ARIA charts in 2010 and earned a gold certification.

It featured hit singles such as 'Saturday Night' and 'Inescapable'.

Walker released his debut album 'Introducing' . . . Stan Walker in 2009, which debuted at #3 on the ARIA charts and went on to achieve Platinum.

Its lead single, 'Black Box', reached number one down in New Zealand before he released his second album From the 'Inside Out' in 2010.

This again achieved a #1 ranking in New Zealand for him, and #2 in Australia.

'Unbroken' and 'Choose You' were two successful singles born from that album.

Walker won four New Zealand Music Awards for his efforts later that year.

The duo's performance featured their solo hits before they come together for a duet showing towards the conclusion of the show.

When performing together the audience easily worked out that they are listening to some of Australia's greatest pop voices.

The show was priced at a reasonable $45 or $79 for dinner and show.

Well done to everyone involved in putting on the great show and we look forward to continuing to follow Stan and Jessica as they continue to tour Australia.

SHE CAN DJ PRESENTS MINX - MIX COMPILATION RELEASED MARCH 2 AND NATIONAL CLUB TOUR

EMI - Essential Artist
September 14, 2011 is not a date Minx (aka Rachel Phillips) will forget anytime soon.  At a spectacular awards night at Sydney’s exclusive Ivy nightclub, the Sydney-born house DJ was crowned the winner of EMI’s inaugural She Can DJ competition.

Now, Minx reveals her first EMI release on Friday March 2, ‘She Can DJ Presents Minx’ – a massive 78 minute big-room house music mix compilation, featuring many of the biggest dance music names from around the globe, several of who Minx has already played alongside.  From Swedish House Mafia to Avicci via Calvin Harris and deadmau5 through to Madeon....Minx leaves no gaps on the dancefloor; showcasing why she’s Australia’s No.1 female house music DJ!
Minx has also been working on two of her own original works and collaborations, ‘Chances’ (Instrumental Version) by Minx and Nordean & Minx Ft. Erik Hecht, ‘You & I’; both of which are included on ‘She Can DJ Presents Minx’ album.
Minx couldn’t be more ecstatic about the release, “To be releasing a compilation that contains some of the best dance music on the planet from many of my favourite artists and to have this mix also include my own original works, is a dream come true”.
To celebrate the release of ‘She Can DJ Presents Minx’, Minx will hit the club circuit for a national tour kicking off on Saturday February 25 at The Weekend, Melbourne playing back to back shows through til mid May.  If you’re yet to experience Minx on the decks, now is the time!  Current list of shows below, with more to be announced soon….
As a jet-setting DJ of seven years, Onelove’s first female resident DJ and a Quiksilver For Women ambassador, Minx’s hands were already pretty full, but as She Can DJ’s leading lady, life’s hit a whole new level as one of Australia’s most in-demand DJs.
Before the win had even sunk in, she was en route to the dance music Mecca of Ibiza to play the sets of her life at landmark clubs like Pacha, Nassau Beach Club and Café Mambo during the island’s infamous closing week.
Arriving home in 2011, she hit the ground running, playing some of the hottest nights of the social calendar, including EMI’s ARIA Awards after-party, Cleo Magazine’s Swimsuit Party, MTV’s Summer Party and WHO Weekly’s Sexiest People Party, before performing at the Sydney and Adelaide Stereosonic shows.
Minx had played Stereosonic four times before, but never like this. In Sydney, she opened the main arena in ANZ Stadium (officially Australia’s largest dance party), but it was in her previous hometown of Adelaide that delivered the biggest highlight. With several International DJs running late, she was asked to play before Swedish superstar Avicii to a packed main stage. “I don't think I stopped smiling for the rest of the weekend” she gushes.
Come 2012 and there’s no sign of taking her foot off the accelerator. If anything, she’s hitting full throttle.  One thing’s obvious, this red-hot star is ready to shine in a whole new light.

HYRO DA HERO Is an undoubted star in the waiting” - Kerrang!

“Traditional rap fare bumps against raging Bad Brains-esque hardcore with a power few are currently harnessing” – 4/5 Rolling Stone

There are cycles in everything.  Seasons come and go. Trends pop and deflate. Careers rise and fall. Genres of music live and die. Once in a while, an artist steps up who doesn't quite follow the cycle. He doesn't pay heed to "What's cool." He doesn't give a shit about "Who's hot." He doesn't follow the zeitgeist but, rather, the zeitgeist follows him.

HYRO DA HERO is about to flip rap upside down, inside out and all around loading rock 'n' roll attitude into explosive, engaging and enthralling rap music resembling Nas fronting Rage Against The Machine.  This is evident on HYRO DA HERO’s debut album ‘Birth, School, Work, Death’ with Rock Sound calling it “groundbreaking for any genre” and Blunt magazine touting the tracks “generational anthems”.

However there is nothing quite like seeing HYRO DA HERO live, an enigmatic performer with a fiery live show "It all really goes down on stage. You need to hear and see this live." – HYRO DA HERO.
