GQ Australia Man Of The Year Joel Edgerton - 22nd November 2011

Ladies and gentlemen... your man of the year is wait for it... Joel Edgerton.

To many Joe and Jan Doe's a year ago they wouldn't have known who Joel Edgerton was. Insiders, a spread of actors and a few journalists - yes, but others - not much chance.

It wasn't because of lack of talent or good looks - things just were not going his way.

Man, what a difference a year (and a couple of well received firms and some good PR can make) hey.

Hollywood and AussieWood was sure taking its sweet time with this fine Aussie talent, but all's well that ends well.

Journey back to 2008 and Edgerton had just starred in The Square, a flick he co-wrote and his brother, Nash, directed. Well received by many, but no calls. "I sat in Australia going, ‘No one has called me about working for ages, I don’t know if I’m ever going to get another job.’"

A few small roles came Edgerton's way, then quite again. He wasn't sure if Hollywood wanted him.

"I’ve had a lot of ‘moments’ and near misses, stops and starts in this whole game," Edgerton says "I’ve been in it for 15 years and I’ve done some things that are good and some that are bad, things that deserved more recognition. My whole journey and career has been really interesting but the one element it never really had was any sense of great momentum."

So what's happening for Joel? Last year Animal Kingdom hit the mark. Then Warrior. Would you believe he has three flicks on the way even before the release of Bazmark's The Great Gatsby, currently shooting in Sydney, with a few more projects in the works.

Oh, it was raining cats and dogs outside the awards, with fans getting drenched, and some media also copped a bit of a spray. Our boy Joel was dry as a bone however. Make no mistake, his luck has changed for the better.

Little wonder that brilliant Aussie talent is this year's GQ’s Man of the Year.

GQ Man of the Year Awards To Be At Opera House Sydney - 21st November 2011

Ladies and gentlemen... it's that time of the year again. Enter the GQ (Gentlemen's Quarterly) Man Of The Year Awards.

Rachael Taylor holds the position as leading lady for the event however Alex O'Loughlin is arguably the biggest-name man headed home for tomorrow's GQ Man of the Year Awards.

We only have to travel a wee way across from Sydney but the Hawaii Five-O star gets in from Hawaii tomorrow (if you believe the rumours). Twilight Saga's Kellan Lutz and partner Sharni Vinson will jet in from Los Angeles.

Australia is in for a treat with a massive amount of international stars set to headline the annual GQ Men of the Year Awards.

GQ Australia editor, and newly anointed Editor of the Year, Nicholas Smith, in association with Chivas, will host the 2011 GQ Men of the Year Awards at the Sydney Opera House. An exclusive black-tie dinner and awards ceremony will be attended by 250 guests and MC’ed by Wil Anderson, with an after party to follow in the GQ Lounge.

Celebrating Australia’s leading actors, comedians, musicians, sportsmen, fashion designers and visionaries, the 2011 GQ Men of the Year Awards, in association with Chivas, welcomes back home-grown international celebrities Joel Edgerton, Alex O’Loughlin, and Rachael Taylor and comedian Jason Gann. Also on the guest list are actor Hugh Sheridan, chef Manu Feildel, swimmer James Magnussen and The Project’s Charlie Pickering. Adding further star power to the night are the presenters including David Jones Ambassador Megan Gale, chef Pete Evans, actor Jack Thompson, Sydney FC’s Brett Emerton, media personality Steve Vizard and author Tara Moss.

Also, heading to Australia to attend GQ Men of the Year Awards 2011 is star of Twilight Breaking Dawn, Kellan Lutz and his Australian girlfriend Sharni Vinson.

The 2011 GQ Men of the Year Awards, in association with Chivas, comprise 18 categories across entertainment, fashion, the arts, sport, media and philanthropy. Also, for the first time, there is a Woman of the Year category, recognising the achievements of GQ Australia’s favourite Australian leading lady.

For the third year, GQ Australia will present the Men of Chivalry Award, sponsored by Chivas. The award recognises the outstanding achievements of everyday Australian men who have shown true character, performed courageous acts or engaged in honourable quests.

The GQ gentleman always looks his best in a dinner suit and the art deco themed styling for the event will reflect the grandeur of a time when gentlemen were gentlemen and dinner suits were commonplace. In contrast, striking a balance of modernity will be an onstage performance by indie band Guineafowl.

Guests will sup on a menu created by Matt Moran, the highlight of which will be pearl meat canapés and a unique pairing of Baci chocolates with Chivas whisky.

The highlight of the evening is always the announcement of the 2011 GQ Man of the Year.

Following the tradition set last year, the winner will be congratulated with a traditional Scottish toast featuring rare 25-year-old Chivas whisky, and presented with an OMEGA De Ville Hour Vision Calibre 8500 valued at $8,300.

To ensure they arrive looking their award-winning best, nominees will be transported to the ceremony in cars provided by Range Rover, having had the opportunity to stop by the American Crew Grooming Room at the Shangri-La.

The GQ Men of the Year Awards comes at the end of a hugely successful year for the title, which has cemented its place as the premium men’s lifestyle brand with the continued success of GQ and phenomenal growth of GQ Style. Also, in a crowning achievement to a great year, GQ editor Nicholas Smith was named Editor of the Year at the Publishers Award Excellence Awards on November 11.

Sculpture By Sea At Sydney's Bondi Beach; Everyone's A Winner, by Eva Rinaldi - 20th November 2011

It wasn't Sculpture By The Sea that motivated Paul Selwood to become a sculpture artist, but rather the architecture of the Sydney Opera House.

On Thursday Selwood snatched the top prize at Bondi's 15th Sculpture By The Sea exhibition.

Selwood won with his abstract steel construction 'Paradiegma Metaphysic'.

"Paradiegma is an ancient Greek word used by architects who were trying to think about and invent beautiful architectural concepts, like temples," he said.

"The word metaphysic means extra-physical, something more than what is there in the physical material."

Today his artwork was viewed by Denmark's Crown Princess Mary and her husband Crown Prince Frederik, who are visited the exhibition on its final day.

The Danish royal couple have been admirers of the exhibition since 2000, when they came across on the sculptures during a visit to Bondi Beach during one of their first outings in the dealing dating period.

Sculpture By The Sea founding director David Handley told news media that Mary and Frederik were so taken by the event, they took it to Denmark.

"There has now been two Sculpture By The Sea exhibitions held in Aarhus, and 40 Australian sculptors have exhibited there as a result," he said.

Selwood's winning sculpture sits with the works by 61 NSW sculptors, 24 from interstate and 25 international artists...spanning the foreshore from Bondi Beach to Tamarama.

Paul Selwood's sculpture will join two previous winners as a permanent installation in Sydney's Royal Botanic Gardens once the exhibition is over.

Gurrumul and Mauboy to perform for Obama

The White House has asked Gurrumul Yunupingu and Jessica Mauboy to perform on Thursday before US president Barack Obama. The show will most likely be at RAAF Base Darwin when the President addresses troops.

Jessica Mauboy had complications attending Darwin. After being in the Caribbean as part of the Gold Coast’s successful bid for the Commonwealth Games, she returned to LA via Miami to catch a flight back to Australia. But an hour out of Miami, the floor beneath her first class seat started to pop, and the pilot had to return to Miami to screams of sirens from emergency services.

Al Pacino Does The Star Lyric Theatre In Sydney, by Eva Rinaldi - 17th November 2011

The Star (formally Star City Casino) continues to push the celebrity angle, fresh off Leonardo DiCaprio enjoying his digs on site, and even welcoming Stevie Wonder on stage a couple of weeks ago.

Tonight the long awaited 'An Evening With 'Al Pacino' show hit an appreciative and near capacity Lyric Theatre audience.

Pacino aka 'Scarface' (Tony Montana) and 'The Godfather' (Michael Corleone) grasped the crowd from the get go, and kept them for most of the 2 hour performance. Pacino received a standing ovation from his loyal fans and you could tell immediately that the actor was there to give it his all.

Well known Australian media personality Ray Martin moderated / interviewed, which I think added to the overall show.

Cutting away to the big screen at Pacino's instruction to show some of his favourite and most powerful acting work was a nice touch and no doubt gave us Aussies the opportunity to see some snippets from some of his films that were never released in Australia. I also enjoyed hearing about what he calls his "experimental films" and it seems like Pacino is interested in getting into producing since he's funded so many of his personal projects largely by himself (despite a young Steven Spielberg warning him against that sort of thing back in the 70s and 80s.)

My favorite part of the evening was the Question and Answer session. I counted not one but three oddball type questions from the audience. If you do the math about 20% of the question were pretty strange, but maybe that is just a reflection of different kinds of people in society. As they say, it takes all kinds.

The show was a thumbs up, however I felt that the first half of the show was more entertaining and I enjoyed his Hollywood angles and stories... especially his Marlon Brando "secrets" and The Actors Studio stories were wonderful.

The last half of the show was a bit too clever and arthouse for me, however I appreciate that many of the audience members are hardcore Pacino fans and almost worship the ground he stands on.

The show is back at The Lyric Theatre tomorrow, in what is quite likely the last time Australian audiences will have the opportunity to experience Pacino close up here.
