Kung Fu Panda 2: Jack Black And Lucy Liu Do Sydney 3D Premiere, by Eva Rinaldi - 13th June 2011

Hollywood hit Sydney - AussieWood tonight, thanks to Jack Black and Lucy Liu, who star in Kung Fu Panda 2.

Black was super animated and friendly, while Liu was quicker paced with the news media and fans.

As you may have figured, it's their voices, not their faces or bodies that you will see in the flick, but both are likely to share more of themselves via a directors cut DVD of the film in the coming months.

The dynamic duo walked the red carpet full of awesomeness at 6.30pm for the Sydney premiere of Kung Fu Panda 2, a 3D animated film, which has already grossed in excess of $60 million globally in its first week.

Kids of all ages lapped up the stars, Panda, dancing dragon and celebs.

"The best part of being so popular with kids is that their fandom is real - they're not going to turn around and sell your autograph for a million dollars of whatever," said Black.

"They just really like my panda character Po and the guy that I played from School Of Rock - they are real."

Music News Australia was also wrap to have secured Black's signature when the the megastar realised that the crew were also huge fans, not just there to go through the media motions. A Music News Australia insider was overheard "I think the Jack Black print out we did along with the Kung Fu Panda hat and the reporters loud and enthusiastic voice all helped secure the rare autograph from Jack".

Liu, who plays the villain Viper, spent considerable time with younger fans than the press.

Liu told the press on Black: "He is phenomenal and is a consummate soul. It is so nice to be around that energy because it gives you energy and some of that soul."

Hollywood super A list Angelina Jolie has also scored a role in the flick, but it's Black and Liu who have been pounding the pavement over the last fortnight.

Black and Liu have even had access to studio DreamWorks private plane owned by boss and Hollywood mover shaker Jeffrey Katzenberg.

"We are all one big family when we are making and promoting a film so we have to make it around the world together," Katzenberg said.

"It's is a pretty gruelling trip and my plane makes it possible for us to do it together.

"Last night we were in the top of Italy at a film festival - and we could not be here tonight if we didn't have those wings."

The teamwork of Kung Fu Panda 2 was clearly evident off and off the screen.

Cars 2 Australian Premier At Fox Entertainment Quarter, by Eva Rinaldi - 12th June 2011



The Entertainment Quarter aka Fox Studios, Moore Park, Sydney, saw in the Australian premiere of Cars 2 today.

The Hoyts Plaza Theatre was abuzz with excitement and reved up Cars fans.

The weather outside was cold and rainy but the excitement was fast and thrilling.

The red carpet (actually black to fit in with the theme), was a touch short of celebrities and star power, but high on substance and fun for kids of all ages.

There was an interesting mix of celebs and well known folks on hand headed up by Australia V8 Supercars driver Mark 'Frosty' Winterbottom, champion runner Matt Shirvington, Richard Wilkins (Channel 9), Angela Bischop (Network 10) and Mack Trucks Australia managing director, Bean Bestwick ....who we later conducted an interesting and rare video interview with.

It needs to be said that 'Frosty' was so giving to the kids and media on hand and went above and beyond the call of duty. He was also good enough to grant Music News Australia a video interview that both Cars fans and motorsport followers will enjoy.

Ok, now into the films storyline...

Star racecar driver Lightning McQueen and the incomparable tow truck Mater take their friendship to exciting new places when they head abroad to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to discover who has the the world's fastest car. 

The road to the championship is filled with plenty of bumps, detours and super funny surprises when Mater gets dragged into an intriguing adventure of his own:  international espionage. Torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the prestigious race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater's wild journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, followed by his mates and watched by the whole world. Adding to the fast-paced and wacky fun is a colorful new all-car cast that includes secret agents, menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Down To Business...

Cars 2 is a 2011 American computer-animated film produced by Pixar Animation Studios, and it is the sequel to the 2006 film, Cars. In the flick, racecar Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) and tow truck Mater (voiced by Larry the Cable Guy) head to Japan and Europe to compete in the World Grand Prix. The film is directed by John Lasseter, co-directed by Brad Lewis, written by Ben Queen, and produced by Denise Ream. Cars 2 is also the first movie John Lasseter has directed since the release of the original Cars in 2006. The film is being distributed by Walt Disney Pictures and will be released in the United States on June 24, 2011 and the United Kingdom on July 22, 2011. The movie will be presented in Disney Digital 3D and IMAX 3D, as well as traditional two-dimensional and IMAX formats. The flick was first announced in 2008, along side Up, Newt, and Brave (previously known as The Bear and the Bow), and it is the 12th animated film to date by Pixar Animation Studios. The recipe is a winner.


V8 Supercars Ford driver Mark 'Frosty' Winterbottom's to star in Disney Pixar's Cars 2...

Ford Performance Racing V8 Supercar driver Mark Winterbottom will become the first ever Australian sportsman to be cast in a Hollywood blockbuster movie when he voices a character in the Disney Pixars Cars 2.

Winterbottom, who's wife Renee recently gave birth to their first child, character will be called ‘Frosty’ (after his real life nickname) and will have an Australian themed aspect.

The film will start showing in Australian cinemas on June 23 and the plot will see NASCAR-like character ‘Lighting McQueen’ (voiced by megastar Owen Wilson) invited to compete in a World Grand Prix to race against the fastest cars in the world in Japan, Italy and the U.K.

‘Frosty’ will be seen in the scene before the race where he will be the Aussie representative and meets Lighting McQueen.

Winterbottom told the press: "It was an awesome opportunity that comes along once in a lifetime and seeing the character on the big screen for the first time will be an amazing feeling".

"I’m a huge fan of the original Cars, it is a movie I’ve watched countless times and I just can't wait for Cars 2".

Winterbottom is also the official Cars Truck Tour Ambassador with Mack The Transporter which will appear at some V8 Supercars events, Mack dealerships, shopping centres and events and across Australia.

Cars 2 is big and newsworthy, be it for entertainment value, smart marketing ideas and borrowing a few branding and sponsorship concepts from ultra successful Hollywood film franchise James Bond. It's a classy and impressive effort that should leave both fans and critics very happy with the end result. The finished product is as good as the first Cars, if not more so. We're reved up about this one and you should be too.

Exporting Raymond, a documentary - film hybrid in my estimation, enjoyed its Australian premier today at Sydney's Event Cinema, George Street, as part of our Sydney Film Festival.

It was an overcast and wet Sydney day but the atmosphere inside was warm, inviting and jovial.

Exporting Raymond is just one of the 161 films showcased at the Sydney Film Fest, but I think its a safe bet it's the funniest one.

Festival publicist "Nicky" made us feel most welcome at the press call. The film's creator Philip Rosenthal was kind enough to offer us a video interview and photo opportunities before the start of the film and it was Philip who personally invited us to stay and enjoy, so how could we say no.

"Exporting Raymond" chronicles the bumpy road by which long-running and ultra successful U.S. sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond" launched its Russian edition -- now a huge hit in its own right.

The documentary has provided director - creator Phil Rosenthal his own reality-sitcom vehicle and no doubt some additional revenue streams and the nature of the doco means that its likely to be warmly embraced in most of the western world. If you believe Phil and the storyline, other countries are in touch to do their own localised versions of 'Everybody Loves Raymond'.

Goldwyn plans to give the super funny doco a limited theatrical release, and the full Event Cinema in wet Sydney this afternoon would have given the powers that be extra confidence.

Rosenthal introduces us to his quarrelsome parents, the source of some of the "Raymond" family dynamics, before he and Sony executives jump a plane to Moscow to prepare a pilot show, knowing that other American shows like "Married … With Children" and "The Nanny" have already enjoyed success in Russian revamps.

Rosenthal hints to insiders and some film buffs that he was driven to drink at times by the uphill challenges thrown at the Mosco project - Russian Vodka to be exact. It's hard to know at times when your speaking to the creator if he's kidding or serious, and no doubt that can sometimes be an advantage.

Finding the perfect local Ray Romano equivalent was a tough one, and just when they think they have their man, the hiring is blocked by the prestigious Moscow Art Theater, for whom the actor is a valuable ensemble member. Then there's an imperious costume designer who insists on glamming up a show whose original appeal was strictly casual-wear; executives' flat refusal to shoot in front of live audiences; and a forced six-month hiatus before the project can proceed further.

There's a bit of a retro Cold War feel to the doco which a scene even takes us though a war museum, with a German swastika extremely visible one fallen plane. It of course further emphasises the clash of cultures.

Humour, as are smiles and currency are part of the universal language, but as we discover funny in American is not always funny in Russia, so the Russian's decide to throw in a sexy dressed nurse every now and again for effect and guaranteed audience reaction.

Rosenthal is generally seen as quite the serial pest, and its only near the end where some of his ideas really start to be embraced by the Russians.

His connecting with a few non-showbiz Russians...his ex-military chauffeur, a family that invites him to dinner are funny (and perhaps somewhat pre planned). Hey, they have to give it some meat for the storyline. The Skype conversation between the Russian family and his parents cleverly demonstrate how closely the oldie New Yorkers resemble the sitcom combatants they inspired.

Exporting Raymond is a quality production, very funny and quite original. There's numerous situations that have to be seen to be believed. The flick has been an audience award winner at multiple film festivals across the world, and Sydney gave it a big hug earlier today. Even in the unlikely event that you've never seen "Everybody Loves Raymond", you'll still enjoy this hugely entertaining film. Phillip mate, the good news is that Sydney loves you're Exporting Raymond, and we're confident you will continue to enjoy significant worldwide success. Living Between Fucks Australian Premiere Via MCA, by Eva Rinaldi - 10th June 2011

 
Alex Munt is the director, producer and screenwriter of this flick, and a very solid effort it is.

It's based on a novel by Cry Bluxsome with a raunchy cover 'Living Between Fucks'.

Last night the film's stars, Septimus Caton, Bianca Chiminello and April Rose Pengilly did the red carpet at the State Theatre in Sydney, and tonight they were back at Sydney's Museum Of Contemporary Art.

The story is about a writer named Goodchild who is played by Toby Schmitz, who comes back home for the funeral of his ex-girlfriend, who is called the Dead Girl, played by Gracie Otto. She's quite the femme fatale and works in advertising. Love, loss, desperation - relationship ups and downs...that's what to expect.

Murmurs say the film was done for around $25,000 which may make it the cheapest in the festival, but its not cheap and nasty, and is stimulating and mighty entertaining. It also features some music, namely 'Sugar' by Kids At Risk Septimus Caton is frontman. Septimus' hairstyle is quite different from him famous fathers, and we're pleased to report that some of Michael's talent has rubbed off on his son.

Alex Munt's highly-stylised 'pop art film' is based on the novel Living Between Fucks by Cry Bloxsome, from which it draws much of its scathingly funny voice-over narration. 

Paris-based writer Goodchild (Toby Schmitz) returns to Sydney for the funeral of his ex-girlfriend The Dead Girl (Gracie Otto) and starts going nuts - personality disorder kind of stuff. He becomes entangled with the good looking bean counter and financial backer (Bianca Chiminello), who commissions him to write The Love Enterprise - a piece of corporate branding masquerading as Beat poetry. 

Goodchild starts doing the party hard thing interviewing people he encounters on the journey. Producer Andrew Soo's cadent editing style is musically complemented by local bands that appear live in the film - Teenagers in Tokyo, Tennis (now Tortoiseshell), Fergus Brown - and contribute prominently to the soundtrack, together with Kids at Risk, whose frontman Septimus Caton plays Cash in the film.

Motley Crue Metal Rocker Icons Set for Australian September Tour, by Eva Rinaldi - 10th June 2011


Motley Crue, featuring the original line-up of Vince Neil on vocals, Mick Mars on guitar, Nikki Sixx on bass and Tommy Lee on drums, will be joined by Australian rock legend Doc Neeson, voice of the hard rock band The Angels and Bret Michaels, frontman from glam-metal '80s band Poison.
This notorious motley crew will play in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
Motley Crue, also an '80s group and best known for the hits Shout at the Devil, Girls, Girls, Girls, and Kickstart My Heart, have sold in excess than 80 million records worldwide.
Poison's best-known hits include Nothin' But a Good Time and Every Rose Has Its Thorn, and Michaels was more recently seen on the American reality TV show Celebrity Apprentice. That's the show where Donald Trump delights are firing people, if you live in a cave or something.
The Angels and Doc Neeson have had 18 Top 40 hits, including Aussie classics Take A Long Line, Shadow Boxer and Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again in their portfolio.
Motley Crue last toured Australia in 2005.

Cate Blanchett movie to open Sydney Film Festival, by Eva Rinaldi - 8th June 2011


Cate Blanchett's new thriller "Hanna" will open the Sydney Film Festival with the Academy Award winner gracing the red carpet.

Directed by Joe Wright ("Atonement"), "Hanna" will bookend the festival with the closing night film, Mike Mills' "Beginners", starring Ewan McGregor.

"Of course we're very excited to be opening with 'Hanna', the new film by Joe Wright, and to have Sydney Film Festival's patron Cate Blanchett on the red carpet for our opening night event," said festival director Clare Stewart.

The June 8-19 festival will also feature a tribute programme to jailed Iranian directors Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof.

Panahi was sentenced to six years in prison and banned from making films for 20 years last December for "propaganda" against the state.

Rasoulof, who was making a movie with Panahi before his arrest, was also jailed for six years on similar charges.

Stewart said their punishment had defined the last 12 months for film lovers.

"This rocks the foundations of what we understand freedom of expression to be," she said.

Among other movies being shown will be Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life" starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn and "Kung Fu Panda 2", featuring Jack Black, who will also attend the festival.
