Mariah Carey Sydney, Australia concert review

International music superstar Mariah Carey once again won her way into Australian’s hearts as she stepped onto the Sydney stage for the first time in fifteen years.

Always the prima-donna, the 42-year-old was about an hour late to the stage, leaving husband Nick Cannon to keep the jam-packed Allphones Arena audience entertained before finally hitting the platform at about 10.00pm for a 1.5 hour set.

Her opening beats of a remix of Can't Take That Way was well received. Carey appearing blinged-up in a short, figure-hugging mini-dress, that is M.

The artist did not disappoint, her voice is as strong as it was twenty years ago, hitting that signature squeak (1991 hit, Emotions). Some fans and critics feel she may have been holding back some.  It's difficult to known for sure.

The playlist was a mixed lot of hits spanning her twenty year career and mixed vocal range, from the oldies (My All, Always Be My Baby) to the new stuff (It's Like That, Obsessed, Shake It Off, Touch My Body).

There were also a few randoms - one of her all-time favourites, 1997's Close My Eyes, along with an off-the-cuff acapella of Can't Let Go/Love Takes Time.

Carey also casually chatted to her "Lambs" (fans) between breaks, sharing memories and moments and joining in the Australian experience by eating a spoonful of Vegemite, followed by a glass of wine or campaign (we assume) to wash it down.

"It’s not that bad," she said.

Hero took the fans to a new level, before a soaring finale of We Belong Together.

She's still got the look - and the sound.

If M comes back to Australia anytime soon we suspect a sell out or close to once again.

Much of the music sounds like the kind of blues - jazzy - folk you often find in movies, so when I discovered that some of his sounds are in the flick 'Kings Cross Angel', I wasn't at all surprised.  I would totally expect that more of his numbers will be picked up by movie producers in the coming years.

The music is surprising original for the blues - folk genre, and its hard not to believe that eventually Tobias Moldenhauer will have solid to strong name value in Australia and beyond - that will equal if not succeed his outstanding quality of music.

Bio...

A Guitarist-Singer-Songwriter of European background, Tobias recorded his solo demo in Germany 2005, before hitting the road to play music in both Hemispheres. He has performed in a variety of countries, including Germany, Sweden, Italy, the Czech Republic, Samoa and Australia. The latest release ‘Live at the Red Shed’ received airplay across Australia and was toured interstate. Tobias opened shows for artists such as Neil Murray, Victor Martinez and performed with musicians like Angus Diggs (of Jeff Lang, Bob Brozman, Mia Dyson). Solo performances feature effect pedal driven acoustic guitar, bottleneck slide resonator guitar, Hawaiian lap steel guitar and explore different genres with their roots in the Blues. Melodic fingerpicking in open tunings coupled with soulful and haunting vocals, Tobias’ material draws on a wide variety of influences, though strives to put an original footprint onto the sands of contemporary acoustic guitar music.

With his louche air and developed taste for smoking, gambling, port and women, it’s hard to believe Cis Farringdon is only fourteen. And that’s because he isn’t. Agatha his mother lopped five years from her true age and his when she married the amiable Magistrate Posket.

The imminent arrival of Cis’ godfather sends Agatha incognito to the Hotel des Princes to warn him of her deception. But it’s also where her son has cajoled his otherwise staid stepfather into joining him for a binge. High-spirited carousing leads to a police raid and a night of outrageous mishap as the trapped guests make desperate attempts to conceal themselves from the law and from each other.  Indignities escalate at court the next day where Posket, the police magistrate, must preside.

John Lithgow’s extensive stage and screen appearances include the films The World According to Garp and Terms of Endearment (for both of which he was Oscar-nominated), Footloose, Shrek, 3rd Rock from the Sun (winning three Emmys and a Golden Globe Award) and Dexter (Emmy and Golden Globe Awards). His many leading roles on Broadway include Sweet Smell of Success (Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical),  M.Butterfly, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Columnist (all earning Tony nominations), The Front Page and All My Sons; and Malvolio in Twelfth Night for the RSC. 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' enjoyed its Sydney, Australia red carpet movie premiere at George Street Event Cinemas tonight.

A crowd of hundreds of general public and dozens of media welcomed in the popular film franchise.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a 2012 fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. It is the first of a three-part film adaptation of the 1937 novel The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien, to be followed by The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again, due for theatrical release in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Set in Middle-earth 60 years before The Lord of the Rings, the adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.

Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield.  Their journey will take them into the wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers. 

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in  The Lord of the Rings trilogy, with Martin Freeman in the central role of Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.

Also reprising their roles from The Lord of the Rings in The Hobbit trilogy are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum.

The international ensemble cast of the trilogy also includes Manu Bennett, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Barry Humphries, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott and Aidan Turner.

The screenplay for “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” is by Fran Walsh & Philippa Boyens & Peter Jackson & Guillermo del Toro.  Jackson is also producing the film, together with Carolynne Cunningham, Zane Weiner and Fran Walsh.  The executive producers are Alan Horn, Toby Emmerich, Ken Kamins and Carolyn Blackwood, with Boyens and Eileen Moran serving as co-producers.

Storyline:

A younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on a "unexpected journey" to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim a their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug.

Summary: Many entertainment commentators including the Media Man agency think that 'The Hobbit' may be one of the best and most popular movies in Australia for 2012, despite the late release in the year. One for the whole family, and both casual and die hard fans should love it.

Founder, songwriter and guitarist for Italian rock group Belladona, Dani Macchi chats about how Belladonna went straight from MySpace to being nominated for 2 Grammy Awards, recording with Michael Bolton in England, opening for Nine Inch Nails, Staind, Korn and Duff McKagan, his hit radio show "The Noir Hour" on Italys' biggest rock radio station, working with producer Alex Elena (Bruce Dickinson, Avril Lavigne, Miles Davis) on Belladonna's soon to be released album, and more.

Dani on working with Michael Bolton: "Very few people are aware of my one/off experience with Michael Bolton! I was living in London at the time and Michael Bolton had to do 3 TV appearances to promote one of his albums, and I pre-recorded the backing tracks in a London studio and then appeared on TV with him, where he sang live. A great honor for me, compounded by the fact that Porcupine Tree's Gavin Harrison was the drummer of those sessions and TV appearances we did."

Popular Australian performing artists Samantha Jade and The Collective made an in store appearance this afternoon at Westfield, Miranda, in Sydney's south.

Ms Jade celebrated the release of her debut album, met her fans and signed copies of her new CD.

She is aiming to build upon her success, having won The X-Factor music reality TV show.

The artists drew a crowd of a few hundred people, mainly consisting of teenagers.

The performance wraps up a series of live shows for Ms Jade before she joins her fellow X-Factor finalists for X-Factor Live tour.
